Green Arrow is a fictional character, a DC Comics superhero. Created by Mort Weisinger and George Papp, he first appeared in More Fun Comics #73 in 1941. His secret identity is Oliver Queen, billionaire and mayor of fictional Star City; he is best known to his associates as Ollie.
Dressed like Robin Hood, Green Arrow is an archer, who invents arrows with various special functions, such as a glue arrow, a net arrow, or a boxing-glove arrow.
Throughout his first twenty-five years, Green Arrow was not a significant hero. In the late 1960s, however, writers chose to have him lose his fortune, giving him the then-unique role of streetwise crusader for the working class and the underprivileged. In 1970, he was paired with the more law-and-order-oriented hero Green Lantern in a groundbreaking, socially conscious comic book series. Since then, he has been popular among comic book fans and most writers have taken an urban, gritty approach to the character.
His son Connor Hawke also used the moniker Green Arrow for a time while Oliver Queen was deceased.

----------
Superman is a comic book superhero, originally created by American writer Jerry Siegel and Canadian artist Joe Shuster and published by DC Comics. Created in 1932, and rejected by a number of publishers, the character first appeared in Action Comics #1 (June 1938). With a premise that taps adolescent fantasy, Superman is born Kal-El on the alien planet Krypton, before being rocketed to Earth as an infant by his scientist father moments before the planet's destruction. Adopted and raised by a Kansas farmer and his wife, the child is raised as Clark Kent, and imbued with a strong moral compass. Upon reaching maturity the character develops superhuman abilities, resolving to use these for the benefit of humanity. With the success of his adventures, Superman helped to create the superhero genre and establish its primacy within the American comic book.[1] Superman is today widely considered to be both one of the most famous and popular comic book superheroes of all time,[2] and an American cultural icon.[3][4][5][1]
Whilst referred to less flatteringly as "the big blue Boy Scout" by some of his fellow super-heroes,[6] Superman is hailed as "The Man of Steel", "The Man of Tomorrow", and "The Last Son of Krypton", by the general public within the comics. As Clark Kent, Superman lives among humans as a "mild-mannered reporter" for the Metropolis newspaper The Daily Planet (the Daily Star in original stories). Here Clark works alongside reporter Lois Lane, with whom he is romantically linked. This relationship has been consummated by marriage on numerous occasions across varying media, and the union is now firmly established within the current mainstream comics continuity.
The character's cast, powers and trappings have slowly expanded throughout the years. Superman's backstory was altered to allow for adventures as Superboy, and other survivors of Krypton were discovered, including Supergirl and Krypto the Superdog. In addition, Superman has been licensed and adapted into a variety of media, from radio to televion and film. The motion picture Superman Returns was released in 2006, with a performance at the international box office which exceeded expectations.[7] The character has been revamped and updated, most recently in 1986. John Byrne recreated the character, reducing Superman's powers and erasing several characters from the canon in a move which attracted media attention. Press coverage was again garnered in the 1990s with the Death of Superman, a storyline which saw the character briefly killed.

Chloe Sullivan is a fictional character from the television series Smallville, played by Allison Mack. She was created independently of the canonical Superman universe, introduced by Smallville creators to be their 'proto-Lois'; DC Comics bought the character during Smallville's third season and announced plans to add her to the comic in March 2006.
Chloe was reporter and editor at Smallville High's The Torch newspaper (named after Jerry Siegel's school paper). She is in the same grade as Pete Ross, Lana Lang, and Clark Kent. At one time she maintained the "Wall of Weird" — a collection of articles concerning the often bizarre and eerie events that take place in Smallville, many of which are related to the mutagenic effects of kryptonite left over from the meteor shower of 1989.

Hal Jordan is a fictional character, a DC Comics superhero. He is the second Green Lantern and arguably the most famous hero to bear that name. Created by John Broome and Gil Kane, he first appeared in Showcase #22 (October 1959).
The Hal Jordan Green Lantern was one of many revamps of old DC Comics characters that emerged during the Silver Age of comics. Like many of his contemporaries, Hal Jordan became more identified with his heroic identity than the previous iterations of the characters. Controversy erupted among comic book readers in 1994 when Hal Jordan was turned into the evil supervillain Parallax and was replaced as Green Lantern by Kyle Rayner. Jordan underwent a number of further changes in the 1990s including dying and later returning as a new incarnation of The Spectre. Hal Jordan returned to the role of Green Lantern in 2004's Green Lantern: Rebirth miniseries. Hal Jordan is currently the protagonist of the current volume of Green Lantern.

----------
Superwoman is the name given to several fictional characters published over the years by DC Comics, most of them being, much like the more popular Supergirl, a woman with powers similar to those of Superman.
In an effort to prevent the use of a similar name to one of its premier heroes, the very popular Superman, the name "Superwoman" was originally copyrighted by Detective Comics in January 1942. As was the practice, an ashcan was created with the title of Superwoman to secure copyright for the title. The cover was a reproduction of More Fun Comics #73, with the interior content reprinting Action Comics #3. [1] The first true appearance of Superwoman, which is usually thought to have been one of many trial runs for the future introduction of Kara Zor-El as Supergirl years later, was printed in Action Comics #60 (1943).
The first appearance of the name "Superwoman" in a DC comic was a story in Action Comics #60 (from May 1943), where Lois Lane dreams that she has gained superpowers from a blood transfusion from Superman and launches a career as Superwoman.
The theme would be revisited in Superman #45 (Mar/Apr 1947) in a story titled "Lois Lane, Superwoman!", in which a pair of fraudulent magicians cast a "spell" on Lane, making her believe she has superpowers. Superman is forced to play along with the ruse for a time, using super-speed to invisibly intervene in Lane's adventures, supporting the illusion. She briefly sports a costume modeled on Superman's before the spell is "broken". A story from Action Comics #156 in May 1951 has Lois actually gaining superpowers thanks to one of Luthor's inventions, and launches a short-lived career as "Superwoman."
Later stories would sporadically feature tales in which Lois gained superpowers and functioned as a "Superwoman" of sorts, but all of these were, like the 1951 tale above, only temporary, with the powers wearing off by the end of the story. A typical example of this is "The Turnabout Powers" from Superman Family #207 (May-June 1981) where the Earth-Two Lois Lane gained powers from her husband (the Earth-Two Superman) through the unexpected effect of an exotic extraterrestrial plant Superman had brought into their home. The plant's death reversed the effect. Another example would be in the Batman/Superman: World's Finest mini-series where Mr. Mxyzptlk briefly transformed Lois into a "Superwoman" with costume and powers.

-----------
Black Canary is a fictional character, a DC Comics superheroine. Created by writer Robert Kanigher and artist Carmine Infantino, the character first appeared in Flash Comics #86 (August 1947).
Black Canary is noted for her "Canary Cry" – a high powered, ultrasonic scream with the ability to shatter objects and incapacitate villains. However, depending on the era, the Canary obtained the talent in a different manner. Black Canary's regular occupation is that of a self-employed florist, and is best known for her trademark fishnet stockings.
Black Canary was among the first generation of superheroes and a member of its all-star group the Justice Society of America.
The 1986 maxi-series Crisis on Infinite Earths reset the history of the DC Universe and split the character into two entities: Dinah Drake Lance, who took part in Golden Age adventures and married Gotham City detective Larry Lance, and their daughter Dinah Laurel Lance, who appeared in the modern stories.
Dinah Laurel Lance grew up idolizing her mother's superhero friends and (initially against mother's wishes) took up her mother’s crime-fighting mantle at age 19. She joins the Justice League soon after its formation. Dinah Laurel conducts espionage, counter-terrorism, and rescue missions with a group of female vigilantes, and is also a longtime partner/romantic interest of Green Arrow Oliver Queen.
Dinah Lance appears briefly in the television adaptations of Birds of Prey, and the Black Canary appears in a number of episodes of Justice League.
The combination of the Black Canary's courage, fearlessness, and fighting prowess, with her sex appeal (accentuated by the fishnet stockings), has resulted in her also being referred to as "The Blonde Bombshell".

The Flash is a name shared by several DC Comics superheroes. Created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Harry Lampert, the original Flash first appeared in Flash Comics #1 (1940).
Once nicknamed the Scarlet Speedster, the Flash possesses "super-speed", which includes the ability to run and move extremely fast, use superhuman reflexes and violate certain laws of physics. Thus far, four different characters, each of whom somehow gained the power of "super-speed", have assumed the identity of the Flash: Jay Garrick (1940-1986), Barry Allen (1956-1986), Wally West (1986-2006), and Bart Allen (2006-present).
The second incarnation of the Flash is generally considered the first hero of the Silver Age of comic books and the superhero has remained one of DC‘s most popular ever since. Each version of the Flash has been a key member of either the Justice Society of America or the Justice League, DC’s all-star teams, although it has yet to be seen what kind of role Bart Allen will play in either the Justice League or Justice Society, given how recently he assumed his role as the current Flash, alongside Jay Garrick.
The Barry Allen version of the character was featured in a live action television series in 1990, starring John Wesley Shipp. The Wally West version of the Flash is featured in the animated series Justice League.

----------
Superboy, also known Kon-El and, later, Conner Kent, is a fictional superhero in the DC Comics Universe. He is a hybrid clone of Superman and his archnemesis Lex Luthor, and a modern update of the original Superboy, who is a younger version of Superman.
Superboy's origins start with Project: Superman, which is the Superman cloning project originally intended to recreate the Man of Steel. Due to the inability to replicate Kryptonian DNA, the clones of Superman degenerate after a short period of time.[1] Upon Superman's death,[2] the project is reinstated in secrecy in conjunction with Lex Luthor and Cadmus Labs to replace the fallen hero. After 12 documented attempts at recreating a Superman, human DNA, secretly that of Lex Luthor, is partially used to stabilize the Kryptonian DNA. The is result: Superboy, the first successful clone of Superman

----------
Martian Manhunter (J'onn J'onzz), alternately known as the Manhunter from Mars, is a comic book superhero who appears in DC Comics. He first appeared in the back-up story "The Strange Experiment of Dr. Erdel" in Detective Comics #225 (cover date: November, 1955), written by Joseph Samachson and illustrated by Joe Certa.
J'onzz is a native of the planet Mars (known as Ma'aleca'andra in his native tongue- a nod to Malacandra, the name used by the inhabitants of Mars in C. S. Lewis's novel Out of the Silent Planet), who possesses abilities similar to those of Superman, including flight, heat vision (sometimes called "Martian Vision", and inconsistently accompanied by a full Superman-like suite of vision powers), super-strength, and super-stamina. He also possesses the powers of intangibility, invisibility, telepathy and shape-shifting; related to shape shifting is the power to alter his density or phase, thereby becoming intangible and able to pass through solid objects. His usual public appearance is tall, hairless, green-skinned humanoid with a pronounced brow. He is highly sensitive to fire; in some stories this weakness is a physical weakness, and in others it is purely psychological. Fire can affect him much as kryptonite does Superman, making him sick, weak, and unable to use his various powers.

Wonder Woman is a fictional DC Comics superheroine co-created by William Moulton Marston and wife Elizabeth Holloway Marston. Wonder Woman first appeared in All Star Comics #8 (Dec. 1941). She is among the first — and most famous — comic book superheroines, and is written as a founding member of the Justice League.
In most adaptations, Wonder Woman is Princess Diana of the Amazon warrior tribe, based on Greek mythology, "Diana" being the Roman name for the Greek goddess Artemis on whom the character is based. The Amazon ambassador to the larger world, Diana was awarded several gifts by the Olympian gods, including the Lasso of Truth (created from the Golden Girdle of Gaea) and indestructible bracelets/gauntlets (formed from the shield Aegis). For several years she was described in the splash page of each story, as "beautiful as Aphrodite, wise as Athena, swifter than Mercury, and stronger than Hercules."
Marston designed Wonder Woman to reflect his conception of an empowered independent female character, with several subsequent writers also working this idea into the character.
In addition to comic books, the character was featured in the popular 1975 to 1979 television adaptation starring Lynda Carter, as well as the Super Friends and Justice League animated series. Plans for a motion picture adaptation are also underway.

Kara Zor-El is a fictional DC Comics superhero and the cousin of Superman. She first appeared in Action Comics #252 (May 1959) and was the first of several people to use the name Supergirl. She was killed during the Crisis on Infinite Earths in 1986, then retconned out of existence. Kara was reintroduced in 2004 in the Superman/Batman comic book series.
Kara Zor-El was the last survivor of Argo City of the planet Krypton, which had survived the explosion of the planet and had drifted through space. When the soil of the colony was turned into Kryptonite, lead sheeting was placed on the ground. But meteorites pierced the sheeting and the Kryptonians began to die of radiation poisoning.
Kara was sent to Earth by her parents Zor-El and Allura to be raised by her cousin Kal-El, known as Superman. So Superman would know Kara was his cousin, her parents provided a costume based closely on the Man of Steel's.[1]Upon meeting Kara (who had begun to display powers similar to those of Kal-El), Superman decided she would become his secret weapon, and explained that her presence on Earth must be kept confidential while he trained Kara in the use of her new powers.
Kara adopted the identity of Linda Lee, an orphan at Midvale Orphanage, hiding her blonde locks beneath a brunette wig. During this period and for two full years, Linda interacted with humans mainly on a person-to-person basis performing good super-deeds on a save-the-world one at a time ratio, using clever schemes while trying to avoid becoming adopted before her time came. A distant precursor for her worldwide - even galaxy-wide - fame that was to come soon. Travel to other times or worlds came easy, since it permitted her to be openly seen then.

-----------
John Henry Irons is the third hero known as Steel, a fictional superhero in the DC Universe. He is also known as the Man of Steel, and he was created by Louise Simonson and artist Jon Bogdanove in Adventures of Superman #500 (June, 1993). Aspects of the character are clearly inspired by the African American folk hero John Henry, as well as Superman. [1]
John Henry Irons was originally a brilliant weapons engineer for Amertek Industries, who eventually became disgusted when the BG-60, a powerful man-portable energy cannon he had designed, fell into the wrong hands and was used to kill innocent people. John faked his death, and eventually came to Metropolis, where one day, while working a construction job high up on a skyscraper, he fell off while saving a friend from the same fate. His own life was saved by none other than Superman. During Superman's fatal battle against Doomsday, Irons was buried in rubble amidst the devastation. Shortly after Superman's death, he finally awoke and crawled from the wreckage, confused and saying that he "must stop Doomsday."
He recovered, but find out that the gangs in inner-city Metropolis were fighting a devastating gang war using BG-80 Toastmasters, an upgraded version of his earlier Amertek design. Irons created and donned a suit of powered armor in Superman's memory in order to stop the war, as well as the weapons, which were being distributed by Dr. Angora Lapin, a former partner and lover of his during his time at Amertek Industries.

-----------
Power Girl (real name Kara Zor-L, also known as Karen Starr) is a DC Comics superhero, making her first appeared in All Star Comics #58 (January/February 1976).
Power Girl is the Earth-Two counterpart of Supergirl, and first cousin of the Earth-Two Superman. The infant Power Girl's parents enabled her to escape the destruction of Krypton. Although she left the planet at the same time that Superman did, her ship took much longer to reach Earth-Two.
Possessing superhuman strength and the ability to fly, she is a member of the Justice Society of America. Power Girl sports a bob of blond hair, wears a distinctive white, red and blue costume, and has an aggressive fighting style. Throughout her early appearances in All Star Comics, Power Girl was frequently at odds with Wildcat, who had a penchant for uttering sexist comments that she found offensive.
The 1985 maxi-series, Crisis on Infinite Earths, eliminated Earth-Two and rewrote Power Girl’s origin; she became a granddaughter of the Atlantean sorcerer Arion. However, comic book story events culminating in the 2006 crossover event, Infinite Crisis, restored her status as a refugee from the Krypton of the Earth-Two universe.

She first appeared in Batman #567 (1999), and was created by Kelley Puckett and Damion Scott (though it was Alex Maleev who designed her costume).
A uniquely gifted warrior, Cassandra Cain was conceived and trained from birth with the intention of creating the perfect bodyguard for Ra's al Ghul. After many unsuccessful attempts to train children from birth in martial arts to make them inculcate it like a native language (the most successful being the abandoned child The Mad Dog), David Cain, a member of al Ghul's League of Assassins, decided the right genes were necessary to create this "One Who Is All". Cain searched for the perfect mother for this child, finding her in the Wu-San sisters of Detroit, who practiced martial arts with each other nearly every moment of their childhood in a type of sister's language. Cain sympathized with the younger sister, Sandra, when he noticed that she held back out of love for Carolyn. To "help" Sandra reach her full potential, Cain murdered Carolyn, then lured Sandra into an ambush by the League of Assassins, where he defeated her. Cain spared Sandra from death on the condition that she bear his child, and leave her for him to raise. Awed by the potential heights she could reach in her physical talents now that Carolyn was gone, Sandra agreed to Cain's bargain in order that she might go on to become the unstoppable force of nature known as Lady Shiva: creator and destroyer. Shiva's hope for her child was that she might one day grow to be the one force that could stop her reign of destruction.

Captain Atom is a fictional comic book superhero. Created by writer Joe Gill and artist/co-writer Steve Ditko, he first appeared in Space Adventures # 33 (March 1960). Captain Atom was created for Charlton Comics but was later acquired by DC Comics and revised for DC’s post-Crisis continuity.
In both incarnations, the character was a military official—scientist Allen Adam in the Charlton version, Air Force pilot Nathaniel Adam in the DC version—who was caught in a scientific experiment and “atomized.” He was able to reform his body, and found that he had acquired superhuman strength and endurance, the ability to fly, and to project energy blasts.
Throughout the years, the character has been featured in several moderate-to-short lived eponymous series, and has been a member of DC’s all-star Justice League.

----------
Maxima is a fictional comic book character in DC Comics' Superman titles. She was created by writer Roger Stern and artist George Pérez, and first appeared in Action Comics #645 (Sept 1989)
Oldest child of the Royal family of the planet Almerac, the fiery-tempered Maxima came to Earth in search of a suitable mate, leaving behind Ultraa, her betrothed. She and Superman are genetically compatible; she could give him what no Earth woman could - children. She was infuriated when Superman rejected her offer, saying he had no desire to father despots (Action Comics # 652).
Maxima later found herself reluctantly working with Brainiac who had destroyed Almerac with the Warworld. She turned against him, and helped Earth's heroes defeat him, subsequently joining a reformed Justice League for her own reasons after the League saved Almerac from Starbreaker. As a Leaguer, she helped in the fight against Doomsday, and when that version of the League disbanded, she became a member of Captain Atom's Extreme Justice. She considered both Captain Atom and Amazing Man as potential mates, but neither were interested. During the period of her flirtation with Captain Atom, an angry jilted Ultraa attacked him, Maxima eventually stopped the brawl and sent Ultraa back to Almerac.
She offered herself to Superman again, hoping that her recent good deeds would offset her earlier ruthlessness. (Superman: The Wedding Album, Man of Tomorrow #7) Superman, now married to Lois Lane, was even less interested in her proposal than before. Angry and humiliated, she joined the Superman Revenge Squad. She swore that Superman had rejected, humbled and humiliated her for the last time, and threatened that the next they met, it would truly be war (Man of Tomorrow #10).
However, in her next appearance, during the build up to the Our Worlds at War crossover, Maxima and the 'Chosen People of Almerac', as she phrased it, showed up in Earth's solar system where they met up with Superman and fellow JLA member, Green Lantern. Superman and Green Lantern were just beginning to investigate the disturbing disappearance of Pluto and the even more distressing engine ion trail associated with Warworld, when they stumbled across Maxima, her people, and the supervillain Massacre.
After a battle full of wounded pride, Maxima eventually conceded her position when Almerac's rendezvous showed up using a Boom Tube. She explained that she was leading her people to safety from Imperiex, the force that conquered her world. Massacre had seemed to meet his death back in Superman #106, however somehow Maxima came across him and described her association in these words, "Massacre serves only me now". To save her people, she allied herself with Darkseid's son, Grayven, who was taking them to regions unknown. This was also being undertaken without the knowledge of Darkseid. Maxima left Superman with these words: "Mark my words, when Imperiex comes for your precious homeworld, you'll see alliances you've never dreamed of."
All that Maxima warned eventually came to fruition as she and a myriad of other characters (both heroes and villains) formed alliances with Earth and Apokolips in an effort to destroy Imperiex (Man of Steel #115).
Maxima ultimately met her demise in an heroic effort to put her ship between the destructive beams of Brainiac 13's Warworld which would have resulted in the destruction of the entire universe (Man of Steel #117).

----------
Dick Grayson is a fictional superhero in the DC Comics Universe. He is Bruce Wayne's first ward (later on adopted son), and the original Robin, The Boy Wonder (later The Teen Wonder), before evolving into the superhero Nightwing. Invented by Batman creators Bob Kane and Bill Finger and illustrator Jerry Robinson, he first appears as Robin in Detective Comics #38 (May 1940).
The youngest in a family of acrobats known as the "Flying Graysons", Dick watches his parents killed by a mafia boss to extort money from the circus that employs them. Bruce Wayne, secretly Batman, takes him in as his legal ward.
Throughout Dick's adolescence, Batman and Robin are inseparable, but, as Dick grows older and spends more time as the leader of the Teen Titans, he takes on the identity of Nightwing to assert his independence (other teenaged heroes will later fill in the role of Robin). His Nightwing persona was created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist George Pérez, and first appears in Tales of the New Teen Titans #44 (July 1984).
As Nightwing, Dick Grayson leads the Teen Titans and later the Outsiders. In an eponymous series, launched in 1996 and continuing at present, he becomes the protector of Blüdhaven, Gotham's economically troubled neighboring city.
As Robin, Dick Grayson has appeared in most other media adaptations of Batman. The Batman animated series of the 1990s is the first one to portray his evolution into Nightwing.

----------
Rogue (Anna Marie) is a Marvel Comics superhero, a member of the X-Men. Created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Michael Golden, she first appeared in Avengers Annual #10 (August 1981). More than most mutants, Rogue considers her powers a curse. She involuntarily absorbs the memories, physical strength, and, in the case of super-powered persons, abilities of anyone she touches. This prevents her from making physical contact with others, including her longtime love Gambit.
Hailing from Mississippi, she is the X-Men's self-described southern belle. A runaway, she was adopted by Mystique of the Brotherhood of Mutants but turned to the X-Men when the aftereffects of her repeated use of her mutant power - particularly the permanent absorption of Ms. Marvel's psyche and Kree powers - threatened her sanity.
Rogue has been a popular and consistent member of the X-Men since the 1980s. She has been featured in most X-Men animated series and video games. In the X-Men film series she is portrayed by Anna Paquin.
Rogue is unusual among the X-Men in that her real name and her early history were not revealed until more than twenty years after her introduction. Until the backstory provided by Robert Rodi in the Rogue ongoing series begun in September of 2004, Rogue's background was only hinted at in various issues, this resulted in what little information was established before this being contradictory. In X-Men Unlimited #4, Scott Lobdell indicates that Rogue ran away from her father after her mutant powers manifested, but in Uncanny X-Men #182 Rogue reflects that she never knew her father because he'd left before she was born, and several issues, including Uncanny X-Men #178 and X-Men #93, indicate that Rogue was taken in by Mystique and Destiny before her mutation became active.
Regardless, every version of Rogue's history begins in Caldecott County, a fictitious county of Mississippi. As depicted in Rogue #2 (October 2004), her parents, Owen and Priscilla, married early in their relationship and lived in a back-to-nature hippie commune. Although the marriage seems to have been an unsteady one, both Priscilla and her younger sister Carrie doted on Priscilla's infant daughter Anna Marie.
The members of the commune became interested in Native American mysticism, and convinced a shaman to try to help them gain access to a mystical place called the "Far Banks" where they believed dreams would come true. However, the ritual they attempted resulted in Priscilla's disappearance, and Owen brought Anna Marie to Carrie to raise.
Carrie, in her grief at the loss of her sister, was a strict and authoritarian guardian, and Anna Marie a rebellious child. Rogue #2 indicates that this, and Anna Marie's equally poor relationship with her father, is what prompted her to run away from home as a young teenager and begin using the name "Rogue." Not long after she was approached by Mystique, who sought her out on the advice of her precognitive partner Destiny and took her in as a daughter.
At some point, Rogue grew close to a boy named Cody Robbins. During their flirtation, she impulsively kissed Cody, at which point her latent mutant power to absorb the life energy and psyche of others with skin-to-skin contact emerged. Rogue was traumatized by the experience, and Cody was left in a coma from which he would not awaken.

----------
Black Lightning is the first major African-American superhero to have been published by DC Comics. He debuted in Black Lightning #1 (April 1977), and was created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden.
A gold medal-winning Olympic decathlete, Jefferson Pierce returned to his old neighborhood (the notorious Suicide Slum in the proud city of Metropolis) to become a high school teacher. Appalled by the violence he saw, Pierce tried to intervene on behalf of his students, but quickly learned that the 100, the local criminal organization, objected violently to interference. Peter Gambi, a family friend and tailor, designed the costume and electronic power belt of Black Lightning. Pierce donned a mask, an Afro wig, a hip way of talking, and Gambi's outfit that gave him electrical powers to become Black Lightning, defender of the poor and underprivileged (later, when Black Lightning was captured by his enemies and the belt that gave him his powers was destroyed, it was discovered that he had somehow internalized the power and no longer needed the belt).

All of them are partners, and sometimes spouses or lovers, of the various incarnations of Hawkman, and shares many features with the character Hawkwoman.
Shiera Sanders first appears in Flash Comics #1 as a civilian supporting character in the Hawkman feature. Archaeologist Carter Hall has a dream that he is an ancient Egyptian prince, Khufu, who has a lover, Princess Chay-Ara. The next day, Carter meets a woman named Shiera who looks exactly like the woman in his dream. Carter dons the identity of Hawkman and Shiera becomes Carter's girlfriend. Shiera first appears in costume in All Star Comics #5 during Hawkman's solo segment of the Justice Society of America story. Shiera dons a spare set of ninth metal wings developed by Hawkman, masquerading as Hawkman in order to trick some criminals. Shiera continues to wear the costume and wings in later stories, eventually adopting the identity of Hawkgirl.
